It’s not often you look up in the Trinity Leeds shopping center and see a huge 25 meter portrait of the legendary Leeds United Football manager Daniel Farke staring back down at you.
But if you’d have been there any time at the end of May, that’s exactly what you would have seen.
Adrian from Leeds based PR company Umpf got in touch with us to talk about installing a massive piece of art work on the glass roof of Trinity Shopping Centre. Having worked with Adrian and the team at Trinity in the past (check out the Tour De Yorkshire project here) we knew it was going to be a great project.
After some discussed, it was decided that as a show of support for Leeds United FC who were playing Southampton in the Championship Play Off Final on May 26th we would create a huge portrait of the Leeds Manager Daniel Farke.
With preparation work on the go for a very different kind of mosaic land art for Water Aid in partnership with the Wimbledon Foundation, the Sand In Your Eye team had to regroup and replan the schedule to be able to meet the activation date of May 25th.
After a bit of an issue with the vinyl supply and some very fast redesign from designer Dave, the team spent more than a day on hands a knees cutting and labeling the giant vinyl jigsaw pieces ready to be loaded and taken to Leeds.
Working with the very talented window ninja Lee Huges and his Sam Bedford from The PLA Group, the install team spent two full days directing the men on the roof on where to place the pieces and reassuring them that from below, It looked exactly as it was supposed to!
On the run up to the match, the art work gained blanket media coverage across Yorkshire with broadcast pieces on both BBC and ITV, all local radio stations, a full-page YEP front cover, a half-page print piece in The Sun, plus Daily Mail, online, influencer content, and social media.
Unfortunately even with the Sand In Your Eye team and all the Leeds supporters behind them, the whites missed out on a spot on the Premier League.
