With Christmas coming and everybody getting excited about seeing Santa, Bradford BID asked us to make one of our famous ice sleighs for the big guy for Bradford’s Christmas lights switch on.

Sand In Your Eye love to work in Bradford, it’s where we founded and grew our sculpture business. This year we have been in the city centre for their Mini Pumpkin Festival, the Sparkling Bradford Christmas Card Trail, and some fantastic, thought provoking land art in Shipley for Bradford Council’s DNAire project for the UCI championships.

We make a lot of ice sculptures in winter but the most popular ice carving is our ice sleigh. Visitors to events really love to watch our ice sculptors at work and of course take photos of themselves sat in the ice sleigh with Father Christmas.

Rich Spence and Mark Wilson, our professional ice sculptors arrived early in the morning with their chainsaws revving to get going on the giant ice sculpture. As well as watching the ice carving, there was plenty to do in Bradford during the day with a school choir competition taking place in the Broadway Shopping Centre, but things really got going in the early evening with the arrival of Santa. People queued to take photos with Santa in his beautiful ice sleigh, even Jonny and Leanne from Bradford BID got to meet him.

The crowds were thrilled by the ice carving, as well as musical performances throughout the day and evening, including Heather Small of M People fame who performed all her hits. Finally the Christmas lights were switched on and Bradford began to sparkle.
