This summer, we had the absolute pleasure of teaming up with Bradford Business Improvement District (BID) once again to create a sand sculpture trail. Having collaborated with the BID team on numerous projects over the years, this partnership remains one of our most cherished. As a driving force behind local urban renewal, Bradford BID continuously works to transform the city Centre into a vibrant, welcoming destination for residents, visitors, and local businesses. For our Creative Director, Jamie—a proud Bradford local—bringing his sand artistry back to a city undergoing such an exciting transformation is always deeply personal and special.

A Fresh Concept: The Evolution of the Hirable Trail
The story began a few years ago when we created a large summer sand trail for Blackburn BID. The sand sculpture trail was a great success and we took all the sculptures back to our studio to store ready to hire again.
Our team member, Jocasta, spotted an opportunity to offer compact, sculptures to create a value for money trail ideal for 1 to 2 weeks hire. This would allow BID teams and event organisers to access high-impact, professional sand sculpture trails at a competitive cost.
Jocasta reached out to Johnny at Bradford BID to pitch the concept and ask if Bradford would host the official world premiere. Always eager to pioneer new ways to drive footfall, support town-center trade, and bring free, high-quality entertainment to local families, Johnny loved the idea. Together, they curated a vibrant lineup of summer-themed designs to anchor Bradford’s seasonal event schedule before launching the trail nationwide.

Bringing the Beach to Life in the Studio
Before a single bucket of sand hit the city streets, our studio was a hive of compacting, carving, and fine-tuning. Under Jamie’s creative supervision, our sculpting team made up of Peter, Dave and Dan, crafted a detailed array of standalone pieces:
- The Sunshine: A cheeky summer character sporting cool sunglasses.
- The Sandcastle: A traditional seaside castle complete with intricate turrets.
- Dolphins: A pair of gracefully entwined, realistic dolphins
- The Mermaid: A beautifully detailed sea nymph.
- The Ice Cream Van: A retro seaside favorite.
- The Octopus: A detailed sea creature featuring dynamic, curling tentacles.
- The Hermit Crab: A playful little character hiding under a classic sand bucket and spade.
- Trail Classics: Lightweight favorites from our earlier collection—the Seagull and the Crab—joined the new lineup for seamless transport and setup.

Live Carving and TV Fame at The Broadway
Once studio preparations were complete, Dave worked closely with Bradford BID to strategically position each sculpture in high-footfall spots across the city center, helping direct visitor flow toward local businesses. The sand sculptures were installed by Dave and team in the morning and then removed again at the trail making it fuss free for clients and hosts alike.
The highlight of the 10-day event was a special two-day live carve inside The Broadway Shopping Centre. Working with just over a ton—of packed sand, Jamie Wardley and Peter Mckenna carved an intricate tabletop underwater seascape complete with curious fish peeping out from rocky crevices.

The live carve generated extra buzz thanks to Jamie’s role as a judge on the BBC competition series Race Against the Tide. Having featured on BBC Breakfast that very morning, Jamie spent the day chatting with sharp-eyed shoppers coming up to say, “I just saw you on the telly this morning!”
Bradford being Jamie’s hometown is always a pleasure for him to be carving. Many friends old and new came to see him at work and strangers who remember the Darwin sculpture in the city many years ago stopped to chat and ask questions about sculpture. His children also popped by to watch him and Peter at work.

Community Spirit in a Flourishing City
The entire project was a resounding success for the city centre. Bradford BID’s proactive leadership ensured local retailers were actively involved, with neighbouring shopkeepers and management at The Broadway providing fantastic support to our crew throughout the fortnight.
Integrated into the broader “Bradford by the Sea” initiative—which featured ocean-themed games and interactive play delivered by Giant Playbox—the trail helped turn the city streets into a bustling hub of activity. For Jamie, seeing his hometown so vibrant, especially alongside the ongoing regeneration and anticipation surrounding the Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture celebrations, made this collaboration with Bradford BID particularly special.
Hopefully we will be back again in Bradford soon, as it’s where Jamie’s heart is!
