This Halloween, whilst we were busy with pumpkin carving we decided to try something new that we have been keen to launch for a while.

Our professionally carved pumpkins are like sculptures in their own right, but to our knowledge, a sculpture made entirely from pumpkins has never been seen before in the UK. Jamie Wardley, Sand In Your Eye’s founder and chief pumpkin artist was very excited to be the first to try such a ground breaking art form such as pumpkin sculpture.

The Bradford Pumpkin Trail was planned for the end of October and would feature carved pumpkins in scenes all around the city centre. Bradford BID, who commissioned the family trail wanted a Bradford theme, so an obvious choice for the pumpkin sculpture was the Bradford Boar, the traditional emblem of the city.

The legend is that many hundreds of years ago a terrifying boar rampaged through the forests surrounding Bradford and the local lord offered a bounty to whoever could kill it. We reimagined it so that the pumpkin sculpture of the boar could get his revenge and chase the pumpkin Yorkshire folk down the street with their flat caps flying as they ran!

We’ve obviously carved lots of pumpkins before and whilst this might be our first pumpkin sculpture we have previously made a few vegetable sculptures including our Welsh dragon at the Chelsea Flower Show, sculpted from red peppers, sweet potato and tomatoes and an owl carved from a variety of fruit and vegetables for the Potteries Shopping Centre a few years ago.
