When Yana reached out to organise a community arts event in Whitby, it was rooted in a deeply personal milestone: marking 20 years since the passing of her father, Fif Robinson. Fif was an ecologist, dedicated conservationist, and a grassroots organiser who brought people together through art, music, and activism. From launching the “Whitby on Fire” network across a 20-mile radius to fostering projects that grew into the Whitby Community Choir, he was a true community spark.
In previous years, the family had commemorated his memory with gatherings, but Yana wanted to transform that tradition into a wider public celebration. Drawing on her background as a professional bid writer, she secured Arts Council funding for a three-week programme of participatory workshops choosing not only to secure the bid, but to deliver the events herself. The programme (Whitby Gathers) reimagined Whitby beach as an open creative site, embedding themes of conservation and nature while welcoming both those who knew Fif and visitors simply wanting to join in the fun.

“Build a Turtle for Someone You Love”
We were invited to host a full day of sand sculpture workshops on the beach, inspired by a childhood memory of Yana and her sister carving a turtle and an octopus with their father on holiday.
Centering the workshop on that moment of connection, participants were invited to “build a turtle for someone you love,” give it a name, and make new memories together in the sand.

Bringing the Sand Sculptures to Life
The event took place on a bright, beautiful day on Whitby beach. Jamie, our creative director, led the sessions alongside his seven-year-old daughter, Emme, plus help from his sister, his father and Yana’s family also.
Across four sessions, families gathered to shape their own unique turtles from mounds of sand. Turtles are an accessible starting point for beginner sculptors: using simple tools to form the outline and techniques like undercutting to cast deep shadows, each participant was able to personalise and decorate their turtle’s shell.
Being part of such a lovely commemoration was an experience that genuinely moved all of us. It felt like the perfect tribute—celebrating precious memories sculpted in the sand, while giving families the space to slow down, connect, and make lasting new memories together by the sea.
