We created this Beethoven sand drawing in Scotland. This year East Neuk Festival celebrates it’s 20 year anniversary. We have worked many times with this wonderful festival creating sand sculptures and sand drawings over the years. It was fantastic to be back to help celebrate this special year. Beethoven was the theme of the drawing and we wanted to experiment with shadows to create something very striking and it worked!

On Elie beach in Fife it was an early start for Jamie and Jonathan, as soon as the tide went out they began the sand drawing. Rake in hand the drawing started to come together. The weather was on our side so things went smoothly and the drawing was ready for the press call. Jamie and Jonathan posed for photos and the press took images of themadding the final touches to the drawing. Once they had got their drone shots, the tide began to take the image and it washed away.

We are always asked if we feel sad when all our hard work gets washed away by the sea. The answer is no, we have the photographs and the memories of creating the sand art. Beaches are so beautiful we wouldn’t want to leave a trace. We have our time creating something, then the tide resets the beach. As a sustainable company, it’s important to us to have as little impact on the environment as possible.

The drawing was 40 metres and took around 4 hours to draw. We took the images using our drone. We have experienced licensed and insured drone pilots in our team. We also have an in house editor who can create great reels and social media assets.

The sand drawing was featured in both The Times and Guardians pictures of the day. Also a lot of regional press too. The images did really well on social media too, the received international reach.

We have created lots of things for the East Neuk Festival before here are a few. A mixture of sand drawings and sand sculptures. The sand sculptures were created every year over 5 days in front of the Honeypot cafe and B&B. Always enjoyed their tea and egg sandwiches and watching the seagulls try to grab food from unsuspecting people leaving the co op opposite! They liked to sit on top of the sand sculptures too.

From the very early days of Sand In Your Eye to having our first child and coming here to work every year with Flossy and grandma enjoying Crail while Jamie and I worked on sand sculptures and sand drawings with other team members too, it’s a place and a festival very close to our hearts. It really meant a lot to be invited back to celebrate 20 years of the festival.
