We’ve spent a lot of time on the beach at Blackpool, making sand sculptures under the gaze of the iconic Blackpool Tower, countless sand drawings on the golden sands and sand sculpture workshops on it’s famous Victorian piers.
We love the atmosphere of this world renowned seaside town; the sound of the arcades, a walk along the prom, fish and chips from one of it’s many cafes and restaurants. We can’t imagine a day at Blackpool without popping in somewhere after making our sand art.
So, when it was announced that hospitality venues would finally be allowed to open up and let people indoors we jumped at the chance to hit the road and get on the beach to make a giant sand drawing for Visit Blackpool to welcome people back to the Fylde coast.
Jamie, Rich, Liz and Dunc were on the sands by the North Pier early on the morning of May 17th to make some beach art that would celebrate everything that is great about Blackpool – a skyline raked into the sand including the tower, a pier, the Sandcastle water park and a roller coaster and ferris wheel to represent the Pleasure Beach.
It’s been an unseasonably cool and wet May, so it is welcome news that we can finally go inside for a pint rather than shivering outside the pub – but the sun came out and there were beautiful blue skies as we finished the sand drawing, just in time for a film of Rich raking in the words ‘Blackpool’s Back!’ to be shot by drone!
The sand drawing got a lot of attention across social media and from the press, featuring in stories in the Telegraph, on The BBC website and Yahoo News. There were several photographers there all flying their drones – it was finally a bit of good news after a long, cold, lonely winter.
We had a surprise visit from a very well known journalist – Jon Snow of Channel 4 News! He was presenting the news live from the Winter Gardens in Blackpool that evening and he was walking past looking for stories about the reopening of venues and spotted our team on the beach!
Jon was very interested in the sand drawing and came down onto the beach to have a look and interviewed Jamie. The sand drawing opened the Channel 4 News coverage that night!
