The run up to Halloween was a spooky time at the Leeds Royal Armouries, as Sand In Your Eye provided a pop up Halloween Pumpkin Carving Workshop in one of the activity rooms.
Busy having fun and learning new skills
Normally home to arts and craft sessions, the room became a hive of activity for groups of up to fifteen children along with their parents, to try their hand at pumpkin carving. For many, stencil pumpkin carving was a new experience and there were lots of really creative young pumpkin carvers.
A selection of stencils were provided to use as a carving guide…. bats, monsters, Frankenstein and many more. However, as the venue is the UKs national museum of arms and armour, one of the themed designs chosen was the Royal Armouries Helmet Logo which could be tried at three different levels of difficulty for those who were up for the challenge.
It wasn’t compulsory though, lots of children had fun making their own pumpkin stencil designs before carving their own spooky pumpkins.
Many took on the board the help and tips from the Sand In Your Eye Team, learning new skills and approaches to pumpkin carving. Most of the children were looking for something creative to try over the Halloween period and the October half term holiday. Nearly all participants felt really proud (yes there was some gloating) as they produced pumpkin carvings far more ‘spooktacular’ than their parents’ efforts over previous years.
The pumpkins were provided by Leeds Royal Armouries and the kids got to take their spooky pumpkins home at the end of a top value fun filled day, with loads of other attractions and free events happening under one roof.
Happy Halloween everyone! And thanks to the Leeds Royal Armouries for inviting us over for some fun days of pumpkin carving workshops.
