We Raked a 100-Year-Old Legend into the Skegness Sand to Welcome The Tour of Britain stage 2
When you work with sand as your canvas, your biggest client is always the tide—and it doesn’t do extensions. When we set out to draw Skegness’s iconic Jolly Fisherman on his home beach, we weren’t just honouring a piece of coastal history—we were celebrating a huge moment for the town: the arrival of the Tour of Britain. We were delighted that East Lindsey District Council had approached us to work with them on this project.
With stage 2 finishing in Skegness, we wanted to create a proper Lincolnshire welcome for the peloton and to promote the event ahead of race day. And who better than the town’s most famous skipping local? Created back in 1908 by John Hassall, the fisherman with his flying scarf and “Skegness is SO Bracing” slogan was given a whole new role as a massive, sand-carved mascot for the race along with clocktower and a cyclist. The design was created to advertise the race stage and we were very pleased to recreate it in the sand.
The weather was against us and rain thwarted our first effort, but not to be beaten, we woke in the very early hours and created this piece in super quick time. The tide was ebbing ever closer as we raked as fast as we could to beat the tide and the rain that was fast approaching. Dave, Claire and Dan were so happy to get the piece finished just in the nick of time before the sea started to take the image. Now that really was a Race Against The Tide Jamie! Dave captured the image on his drone and we had a well deserved breakfast while we looked at the footage. The sand drawing was the first part of a series of land art we created for The Lloyds Tour Of Britain stage 2 cycle race on the 3rd September. It’s wonderful to see a British seaside town showcased on the world stage. We have such incredible beaches and coastal towns in this country and it’s great to see them celebrated.
