Early on a snowy morning in Keighley, myself and Jamie and his cousin Sam, set up our ice in the playground to make an owl to show the children at Nessfield Primary School how we make an ice sculpture.

Early that week, I had been busy in the freezer blocking out the shape of the owl for Jamie to finish on the day after a presentation to the class. It was great to see the reaction from the students to the pictures of our sand and ice sculptures and to Jamie’s stories of how he became a sculptor.

Everyone wanted to get their hands on some of the ice!

We then went into the playground to finish carving the ice owl and all of the children from the school came outside to visit us. There were lots of questions and great reactions as Jamie revved up his chainsaw.

Talking to the children and giving them the message that they can do the things that make them happy and that mistakes are all part of learning was a different experience for us and one that was very rewarding.

A beautiful day to make an ice sculpture
