On the 4th July we walked onto the beach of Filey in Yorkshire to do a wonderful collaborative sand drawing with the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC). We wanted to highlight that 1 in 6 of funds that the NSPCC use to help children comes from small gifts in peoples wills known as legacy giving.

Claire Jamieson from Sand In Your Eye had been working and planning this event for a considerable length of time. Sand drawings in particular are very dramatic and fast in their execution, but have mountains of planning and preparation to make sure that all goes well on the day. We have Claire to thank for that!  She is the cornerstone that keeps things moving and is also very talented as she was drawing for three days on the beach as well! What a trooper.

On the morning we met with Alex McDowell who is head of the Legacy and Tribute Fundraising at the NSPCC and a wonderful person who you can see really cares about the work he does. Alex explained that “This sand drawing is a visual representation of the big difference a small gift in your will can make to a child’s life. The six footprints represent the one sixth of the NSPCC’s funding that comes from gifts in wills, while the sand echoes its use in our therapeutic services to help children recover from abuse.”

This message was especially more poignant for Claire and I as we had our wonderful baby girl with us tap-tapping her tambourine whilst her Grandma pushed her up and down the promenade. It is paramount that children should be protected and given the best chance in life.
