Once more into the ice kingdom go the Sand in Your Eye crew! This time it was a literary wonderland as characters and scenes from CS Lewis’s classic ‘Chronicles of Narnia’ series of books were to be recreated in ice for Nottinghams Winter Wonderland.

In advance of the trip to Nottingham, the team were hard at work planning the theme, and which characters to include. As with the Cardiff event, CNC machine was used to pre-carve some of the more elaborate elements into the ice sculptures, such as the White Witch’s face, thus saving time on site for the artists to refine the more detailed elements of the sculptures.

Two days were spent frantically unwrapping, lifting, stacking and fusing huge ice blocks to arrange the basic structures of the sculptures and ice bar in advance of the artists setting to work on the beautiful creations you see here.

Jamie, Peter and Dave were the principal sculptors who brought the scene to life with the beloved characters such as Aslan the Lion, Mr Tumnus, the “Wardrobe” of the title, and Jadis the White Witch, elegantly presiding over her ice castle – doubling as the bar! Toby created the friendly Mr and Mrs Beaver characters to add that “cuteness factor”!

Four days were spent meticulously carving with chainsaws and then chipping away with razor sharp chisels to perfect the look before the dazzling lights were switched on to make the sculptures zing in the twinkling, twilight world of Narnia!

The days were long and exhausting, but a well-earned rest was waiting back at the house. Many a laugh was had, and Jamie even brought a ukelele along and had a Taylor Swift singalong with Dan. Yep, that happened!

The resulting alpine ice bar was a treat for the eyes providing a spectacular background for a delicious festive drink or two!
